What is Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Also known as fully comp, comprehensive car insurance covers you against:

  • Damage to others where you are found to be at fault
  • Damage to your car due to fire
  • Theft of your car
  • Damage to your car where you are found to be at fault.

The extensive nature of this coverage typically means that premiums and quotes are higher. However, it provides a greater sense of security. You know you’re covered against a much wider range of potential issues. And there are comprehensive policies which are available at similar prices to third party policies.

Why? Well, many poor drivers, looking to keep premiums low, choose third party only to do so. That resulted in increased claim rates (and therefore prices) for such policies.

Some insurance companies also keep policy prices low to encourage drivers to take up comprehensive car cover. Third party insurance can complicate claims, after all!

The result is that if you’re careful you can sometimes find the cover you need at a price much lower than expected.

Double Check Your Decisions

It’s important not to assume your policy provides what you need, however. When comparing comprehensive car insurance policies, read the details carefully. You should take the time necessary to know your chosen policy provides the cover you want, and that the payment schedule is within your budget.

Using online comparison tools like the one below makes it much quicker and easier to gather policies. This frees up time. Take some of that time to double-check before you commit.

What is car insurance?

Having car insurance ensures you are covered financially if the worst were to happen to your car. This could be damage from an accident, theft, vandalisation and fire damage. It means you won't have to dig into your own pocket to pay for potentially huge repair or replacement costs.

Car insurance is a legal requirement for cars driving on public roads. You will be heavily penalised if you are found to be driving without insurance. The minimum level of cover you must legally have is third-party car insurance. This would cover the damage to another person's car, for example in a collision accident, but provides limited cover for your own vehicle.
